By means of this operation ONA fully enters the field of microhole EDM (electrical discharge machining) technology applied in sectors as diverse as power generation, aerospace, automotive and medical, where ONA has maintained a significant presence for years with its range of wire and penetration based EDM products.
The Durango-based ONA has been active for more than 60 years, specialising in EDM solutions, and is currently the world’s oldest producer of machines with this technology. More than 15,000 of its machines have been installed in 60 countries. One of the top EDM manufacturers worldwide, it has five subsidiaries in Europe, America and Asia, and a large network of distributors.
AAEDM is a small company that designs and manufactures machines for high-precision EDM microhole machining. It is based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and has a workforce of 15 employees. Activity is focused in the North American market. In recent years this has not prevented it from occasionally taking on important operations in different markets such as Russia, China, India and South Korea. Although the company was founded in 2009, almost the entire team has more than 20 years’ experience in this kind of technology.
For ONA, this acquisition is part of the effort to diversify set out in the company’s strategy, with the clear aim of complementing traditional organic growth pathways. The operation should therefore facilitate ONA’s access to new business opportunities involving both current and new clients from the above mentioned industries the company is so familiar with (power generation, aerospace, automotive and medicine). Via its current subsidiaries and distributors ONA can also provide impetus to AAEDM’s catalogue in markets like the European one, heretofore almost unknown to the American company.
At IMTS 2016, to be held in Chicago this coming September, ONA’s stand will present a machine for microhole machining alongside its traditional product ranges.
